Your Role & How You Will Contribute

We are looking for a Junior Associate (Intern) to join our growing ESG consulting firm. The Junior Associate will report to Principals on a project-by-project basis and will be responsible for a full range of research, reporting and administrative support. We believe that teams who like and respect each other produce the best quality work, and high-quality work is our top priority. The successful candidate must be a team player who values a collaborative and supportive firm culture. Junior Associates must be highly motivated and capable of undertaking sophisticated ESG analysis, research and benchmarking for our investor and corporate clients with direction and supervision by Senior Associates, Directors, and Principals. Knowledge of, or direct experience with, ESG in capital markets, including familiarity with key frameworks (e.g., SASB, TCFD, PRI) is a requirement for this entry-level position.

Junior Associates will be given significant responsibilities for executing a wide range of client mandates (for both corporate and investor clients), including developing ESG strategies and policies, conducting ESG materiality assessments (including peer and investor benchmarking), developing frameworks to integrate ESG across asset classes, and assisting clients in meeting their ESG-related disclosure and reporting requirements.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Our firm works with a diverse set of clients. Our corporate clients include public and private companies of varying sizes across a spectrum of industries, including a significant number in natural resource-based sectors. Our investor clients include asset owners, asset managers, private equity firms, foundations and endowments, and pension plans. Other clients include associations, not for profits, and public sector clients.

We commonly deliver a bespoke scope of work, but the services we provide most commonly include:

Corporate Clients 

  • ESG and/or Climate Change Education
  • ESG and/or Climate Change Strategy Development
  • ESG and/or Climate Change Reporting (e.g., Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), CDP Questionnaires)
  • ESG Peer Benchmarking
  • Analysis of Top Investors’ Approaches to ESG

  • Portfolio Carbon Target Setting
  • ESG education for boards, senior management and investment teams

  In this context, key responsibilities of the Junior Associate include to:

  • Assist with preparation and review of client deliverables outlined above
  • Assist with preparation and review of ESG reporting for companies and investors in alignment with key ESG frameworks such as the SASB Standards, TCFD recommendations, CDP Questionnaires, and the UN PRI Reporting Framework
  • Shadow Directors and Principals on client management, including participating in client meetings and presentations and supporting client correspondence
  • Support Directors and Principals on project management, including scheduling meetings; drafting agendas, status updates, work plans, and budget management
  • Support the development of the firm’s thought leadership content for posting on our website and social media channels (e.g., LinkedIn, Twitter)
  • Act as a liaison between Directors and Principals, exercising a high level of confidentiality and discretion
  • Maintain the in-house filing system of pertinent client materials and ESG research
  • Support the team by conducting ad-hoc research requests

 Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and strong interest in ESG in capital markets, including familiarity with key frameworks (e.g., SASB, TCFD, UN PRI, CDP).
  • Highly motivated and capable of undertaking sophisticated ESG analysis, research and benchmarking for investor and corporate clients with direction and supervision.
  • Understanding of the investor perspective on ESG.
  • Strong reporting skills and attention to detail.
  • Exceptional writing, organization and time management skills are essential.
  • Strong understanding of client confidentiality.
  • Experienced team player with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task, meet deadlines in a dynamic, fast paced environment.
  • Commitment to the quality of deliverables with the ability to resolve client issues before escalation in a professional manner.
  • Reliable, responsible, and motivated individual with excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Flexibility in hours, ability to work overtime if necessary.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)

Education

  • Pursuing a University or College education in relevant discipline (e.g., commerce, environmental science, sustainability management, economics, political science).
  • Expertise and interest in climate change, given growing client demand for climate-focused projects, is an asset.
  • Fluency in French or Spanish is an asset.
  • Pursuit of the CFA or CPA designation is an asset.
